Hult BBA follows his passion to Go Pro
Many students come to Hult with a clear career path already in mind. And many arenââ¬â¢t so sureââ¬âthey come with an idea for a startup, or a rough direction, or simply a keen desire to make a difference in the world. Our expert career advisors and faculty love nothing more than to help students find and channel their passion into a viable way forward, for life. We caught up with BBA Class of 2016 graduate Guzmà ¡n Colilla to learn more about how he honed in on his niche at Hult, and made a successful career out of following his passion. Guzmà ¡n was not going to make it as a top skier: ââ¬Å"I would have loved to be a professional skier, because it is one of my biggest passions,â⬠says the Spanish national. ââ¬Å"But as I wasnââ¬â¢t a top skier, I knew I had to prioritize my studies.â⬠When it came time to graduate high school, Guzmà ¡n knew he had to make a decision. ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t know what to do with my life,â⬠he remembers. Several injuries had taken him out of competitive skiing altogether. And so he started his own line of ski clothing, ALLIC. ââ¬Å"There was a gap in the market,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"Big brands owned the ski industry, but they werenââ¬â¢t doing anything to reinvent their products. They had big names and big numbers, and they were happy in their comfort zones.â⬠Guzmà ¡n saw an opportunity for change in the market. ââ¬Å"So I decided to study business at Hult,â⬠he says. Guzmà ¡n developed his business model and launched a new brand of ski wear while majoring in Finance at Hult in London and San Francisco. Guzmà ¡n taking in the Golden Gate Bridge during his time at Hult San Francisco. ââ¬Å"When we arrived at Hult San Francisco, I met Professor Hap Kloppââ¬âthe Founder of The North Face,â⬠Guzmà ¡n recalls. He was sure the sportswear mogul would be far too busy to help him with his new business ventureââ¬âwhich had started selling online and in local shops around Spain. ââ¬Å"But Hap Klopp is a passionate entrepreneur,â⬠says Guzmà ¡n. ââ¬Å"I showed him this project and he was willing to help.â⬠Klopp became Guzmà ¡nââ¬â¢s mentor for his final thesisââ¬âa business plan for ALLICââ¬âhis fledgling ski wear company. From there, the concept took off. ââ¬Å"I really thank Hult for connecting me with such an amazing mentor and professor,â⬠Guzmà ¡n says. Klopp is still working with Guzmà ¡n and ALLIC as a mentor, and has become the ââ¬Å"godfatherâ⬠of the business. The team plans to launch a Kickstarter this winter, after receiving their final collection of clothing designed with the help of Kloppââ¬â¢s partners and designers. Guzmà ¡n (second from right) and the team at his ski wear company ALLIC meet with his mentor, Professor Hap Klopp (front right)ââ¬âHult faculty and Founder of The North Face. While launching his first company was already a pursuit of passion, Guzmà ¡n discovered a new potential path while studying at Hult. ââ¬Å"While I was studying in San Francisco, a friend from Spain came for some meetings with GoPro in California,â⬠he recalls. Guzmà ¡n accompanied his friend to the GoPro offices in San Diegoââ¬âa road trip that changed his life. ââ¬Å"I saw the best working environment of my life,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"I went on a tour of the GoPro offices and after that day I knew I wanted to follow my passion. After seeing that environment, I could never imagine continuing to pursue a career in finance.â⬠He knew he had to work for GoPro, no matter what it took. And it took a lot. ââ¬Å"There were no internships or junior positions in the USA,â⬠Guzmà ¡n says. ââ¬Å"But there were three internships available in Munich.â⬠He applied to all of them. ââ¬Å"I just wanted to work for GoPro no matter the job.â⬠But after several rounds of successful interviews, he had to turn down the opportunity heââ¬â¢d worked so hard for. Guzmà ¡n indulges his sporty side with a Hult classmate in San Francisco. ââ¬Å"They told me that if I could start on June 1st, I had the job,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"But I couldnââ¬â¢t. I had to finish my exams and my degree at Hultââ¬âI was in San Francisco and I had finals.â⬠After finishing his studies and graduating with his degree, Guzmà ¡n hadnââ¬â¢t given up on the hope of a position. ââ¬Å"My dad told me not to give up. He said to contact GoPro and tell them I was going to go visit my aunt in Munich this week and ask to see them while I was there,â⬠he says. The department head emailed him back to say she could meet him that Thursday at 3pm. ââ¬Å"Right after I read that email, I bought a ticket to Munich, and I went to see her.â⬠Guzmà ¡n enjoying his office space during his time at GoPro, Munich. Arriving in the GoPro offices, Guzmà ¡n was expecting a quick chat, a tour, and nothing more. ââ¬Å"But when I arrived, an intern asked me if I was the Spanish guy coming for the interview that afternoon,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"When I entered the meeting room, I had to tell her.â⬠Guzmà ¡n confessed that there was no aunt in Munich, and that he had come just for the opportunity to meet with the department head he wanted to work for. ââ¬Å"After that I was hired,â⬠he says. The position was for a six-month internship, after which Guzmà ¡nââ¬â¢s contract was extended to a year. ââ¬Å"Timing is everything,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"My boss went on maternity leave, and so I had much more responsibility than a normal intern.â⬠ââ¬Å"It was the best year of my life,â⬠he adds. ââ¬Å"I learned so much, met so many people, and grew so fast.â⬠But at the end of that year, Guzmà ¡n realized his time with GoPro had come to an end. ââ¬Å"There was no more space for me to grow,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"I had seen everything on the inside, and there werenââ¬â¢t any opportunities for promotion in my department or openings in other departments for me. I decided I had to move on if I wanted to grow.â⬠Two months on and Guzmà ¡n is now at Real Madrid C.F., working as a video specialist. He works with major brands like Facebook, YouTube, Google, and of course, GoPro. Guzmà ¡n says that it was the mindset he learned while at Hult that helped him in each step of his path towards finding opportunities in sports-related companies and building a career with his passion. Guzmà ¡n lays his hands on the coveted Supercopa de Espaà ±a at his new workplace, Real Madrid C.F. ââ¬Å"You can always find a way to connect your passions to your work,â⬠he says. And itââ¬â¢s worth it. ââ¬Å"Even on the bad days, you can forget that you are working, because your job is something you love. Working with a passionate team all together is one of the best things in life. I could never work doing something I donââ¬â¢t like.â⬠Guzmà ¡n says having passion gives you the edge. ââ¬Å"The thing is, almost everyone takes the easy path,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"Everyone tries to do the same thing. If you have a passion, you have an advantage. Capitalize on that, because if you have a passion, you will put all your effort into it. You will want to be the best, and you will find new ways to succeed.â⬠To find out more about our undergraduate programs and global campusesà download a brochure.à Make the most of what your career has to offer with a Masters in International Business from Hult. Precursors to Suicide in Life and Works of Sylvia Plath...
Precursors to Suicide in Life and Works of Sylvia Plath and Sarah Kane Introduction We are going to describe factors associated with the suicidal process in lives of Sarah Kane and Sylvia Plath as reflected in the late works of these two female authors who committed suicide when they were 27 and 30 years old. Antoon Leenaars and Susanne Wenckstern (1998) have written: ?Suicide notes are probably the ultrapersonal documents. They are the unsolicited productions of the suicidal person, usually written minutes before the suicidal death.? Literary works of suicidal authors written in the time before their death can be read as such suicide notes. It is possible that the suicidal process set off before Sarah Kane started to write her bestâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Interpersonal relations, rejection-aggression and identification-egression are then the three of interpsychic factors. Risk Factors for Suicide in Life and Late Works of Sylvia Plath and Sarah Kane Since there have been a lot of biographies of Sylvia Plath written, we may dare to say, that all these risk factors for suicide have occurred during her life with most of them being present also during the last eight months that were full of traumatic and stressful events and psychic suffering. There are no poems left and probably even not written by Sylvia Plath between May 28 and June 30 1962. There are only few poems written during the time before and during the separation from Ted ? 3 in July, only 1 in August and 2 in September ? the month the couple separated. Then, October was the month when she created 25 poems, the most of the poems written during her last 8 months. In November she wrote 10 poems, then only 2 in December, 7 in January and 6 in five days in February. We have analyzed the poems of Plath and the play 4:48 Psychosis of Kane1 using both 8 categories derived from risk factors for suicide as described by Leenaars and the categories that emerged from the works themselves. The most prevalent categories represented both in the works of Plath and Kane were cognitive constriction with its subcategory of tunnel vision and the category of rejection-aggression. 1 See also ?ermï ¿ ½k (2003) and ?ermï ¿ ½k, Kodrlovï ¿ ½

Essay Smoking Should NOT Be Banned in Public Places
Smoking Should Not Be Banned in Restaurants In the perfect situation, smoking policy would be set by bar or restaurant owners, and customers would patronize the establishments with the policy they prefer. Customers would decide-without the governments help-if they want to avoid smoke-filled rooms or enter them. They might even choose to sit in an area sectioned off for smokers or non-smokers, but the ultimate issue is choice (Ruwart 1). When the government starts telling restaurant owners what their customers can and cannot do, the government is overstepping its boundaries. Our government aims to protect us-to save us from societys evils. However, in an attempt to protect the public from the effects of passive smokingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The plight of restaurant and bar owners is often ignored, but it is a serious issue for them and for their employees. While the argument rages over the effects of smoking on public health, the question that remains is this: How much is society entitled to penalize smokers for their decisions because-in societys view-those decisions are unhealthy? (Samuelson). Smoking tobacco is not an illegal act, yet the 25 percent of Americans who do smoke are often treated as if they were criminals. They are incessantly nagged, blamed for numerous illnesses and unpleasantries, and made to feel guilty by self-righteous nonsmokers (Bork 28). The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that living with a smoker increases your chance of lung cancer by 19 percent. What they fail to tell you is that, in contrast, (firsthand) smoking increases your chance 1,000 percent (Buckley). Why is the act of smoking tobacco, which merely injures oneself, so scrutinized and shunned by society, while drinking alcohol, which is by far more deadly to innocent bystanders, is accepted by society and virtually unregulated? (Krauthammer ). One may not wish to be seated near an extremely obese person in a restaurant, but it would certainly be unconstitutional to deny service to these patrons. The Ethics Of Stem Cell Research - 1643 Words
Michael Thomas Philosophy 3520 Bioethics The Ethics of Stem Cell Research Science fiction has tried to encapsulate social responses that could arise with the development of genetically altered or ââ¬Å"enhancedâ⬠human beings. Regenerative medicine, genetic cloning and life extension are all terms that sound like they came out of a fantastic film or novel, though they are in fact subjects of great research and heated debates. Embryonic stem cells are arguably the quintessential building block of life itself. Theyââ¬â¢re ââ¬Å"undifferentiated cells produced after a fertilized egg has divided several times and developed into a blastocyst,â⬠which is ââ¬Å"a hollow ball of cellsâ⬠inside which is a group of ââ¬Å"fifteen to twenty embryonic stem cells.â⬠â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦One of which is the belief that from the moment of conception, a fertilized egg is ââ¬Å"a human subject with a well defined identity.â⬠Any form of harm being committed against this innocent life should be considered inhumane. A developing cell mass, even in the beginning stages of life has all of the rights a human child would have. Many researchers believe that there is potential to reach a point where embryonic research may lead to breakthroughs in adult stem cells which are not obtained from, and thus do not mean the destruction of, embryos. However, it is the firm stance of the Magisterium of the Church that even a noble end cannot be justified with immoral means of obtaining it. The enterprise changed its name to Chiquita Brands and operates with that name to this day. Chiquita Brands International, Inc. is the final name in a long list of companies whose ultimate origin was the United Fruit Company, formed in 1899 by the merging of the Boston Fruit Company and various fruit exporting concerns controlled by Minor C. Keith. In 1970 it became the United Brands Company when it was purchased by Eli Black. He outbid two other conglomerates, Zapata Corporation and Textron, for a controlling interest in the company. In fact, that is a condensed version of what has actually happened to United Fruit Co. , famed in the U.S. for Chiquita bananas, but known to generations of Latin Americans as el Pulpo (the Octopus). In 1990 the company became Chiquita Brands International. [citation needed] On November 29, 2011, the North Carolina Economic Investment Committee approved $22 million in incentives for Chiquita to move its headquarters to Charlotte, North Carolina. The same day, Chiquita officially announced the headquarters move. The company cited the growing airport as another reason for the move. Research and development will also move to the Charlotte area. [1][4]On March 14, 2007, Chiquita Brands was fined $25 million as part of a settlement with the United States Justice Department for having ties to Colombian paramilitary groups. According to court documents, between 1997 and 2004, officers of a Chiquita subsidiary paid approximately $1. 7 million to the right-wing United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), in exchange for local, employee protection in Colombias volatile banana harvesting zone. Similar payments were also made to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), as well as the National Liberation Army (ELN) from 1989 to 1997, both left-wing organizations. [8][9] All three of these groups are on the U. S. State Departments list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations. According to a Wall Street Journal report in 2004,[10] outside attorneys for Chiquita notified the company that the payments violated U. S. anti-terrorism laws and should not continue. However, payments to the groups continued until Chiquita sold its subsidiary, Banadex, in June 2004. Chiquita currently faces serious charges in a lawsuit issued in June 2007. According to the attorney of 173 family members of victims of the AUC militia this could be the biggest terrorist case in history and may put Chiquita out of business. Terry Collingsworth, a lawyer with International Rights Advocates who is involved with the multi-million dollar litigation, said: This is a landmark case, maybe the biggest terrorism case in history. In terms of casualties, its the size of three World Trade Center attacks. Despite reaching a deal with US prosecutors, Chiquita Brands International still may have to face criminal charges in Colombia, which could even include the extradition of some of its current and former board members. Specifically, on December 7, 2007, the 29th Specialized District Attorneys Office in Medellin called the board members of Chiquita [â⬠¦] to make statements concerning charges for conspiracy to commit an aggravated crime and financing illegal armed groups.
